Tiong Bahru Fishball – Historical fun snack.

It’s been some time since I last visited Tiong Bahru Market. Being here again brought back some fond memories of old. I used to visit occasionally to have their chwee kueh.

These days, the place is a three-storey building, with the food centre at level two. It is spacious, breezy, clean, and pleasant—something we tend to take for granted these days.

Another thing that I believe we take for granted is fishball—specifically, handmade ones.

These used to be widely available from street hawkers everywhere, even outside my school. My friends and I would get a stick after dismissal, and they were like ice packs, perfect little fun snacks we would have as we walked home from school.

Nowadays, you can get the perfectly round-shaped factory-made ones, from any supermarket, even in wet markets. Very convenient.

So finding one that is still made by hand is such a rare discovery. What caught my attention initially was the brightly lit display of fishballs and other related products. There were big ones, small ones, tiny ones, and a whole lot of other fishpaste based products. 🤩

As I looked closer, I noticed the imperfectly shaped fishballs, the first giveaway sign of handmade fishballs. And these look enticingly delicious.

Handmade. The imperfect shape is a telltale sign of effort. 👍🏻

I decided that I had to buy some even though I’ve already had my breakfast, so I got some to go. And I went about my day before returning home to have them as a late afternoon snack and dinner.

I do say these are really well made. The fishballs are bouncy, gives a little bit of a crunch when you bite into them and still taste fresh and delicious despite being 6 hours after they are made. 🤤

Good for a snack or an accompaniment to your meals.

I later did a quick search online and found out that they actually do have a bit of history that you can read more about on their website. More than 5 decades of being in the business! That’s a real piece of history I’m eating. 😋

Their site also tells us a little about the ingredients they use, fresh wolf herring fish, and no flour. No wonder you can taste such flavours! I think they’re worth checking out, and I suspect that visiting them in the morning will reward you with the freshest of what they make. 👍🏻
