黑轮食堂 – A serving of savoury Taiwanese delight!

I was fortunate enough to have been to Taiwan several times, and it is one of the few places that I’m always looking forward to revisiting. Alas, it’s been years since I had a chance to visit. I really miss the lovely people, the varied urban and rural places that are always full of life, and of course, their food.

Their food culture is vibrant, with a wide variety of dishes to choose from, you’ll never get bored, it’s definitely one of the reasons that I love the place so much!

But among all the delicious food out there, there is one dish that is of significance to me, and it is their 卤肉饭, also known as the braised pork rice bento.

卤肉饭 bento! Served in a tin box like the 1960s and 70s!

I was first introduced to it while I was working at one of the ports in Taiwan. I was driving up and down the coast of Taiwan at days on end, and it could get really tiring, but the braised pork rice bento prepared for my meals was something that I always look forward to.

After I came back to Singapore, I was missing their food for quite a bit, especially the 卤肉饭. There was a time where Taiwanese food was trendy in Singapore, and I had a chance to taste it again a couple of times from the numerous shops popping up. They were pretty good, but still, somehow many of them did not manage to stay in business for long, which is quite a waste.

Nowadays there are still some Taiwanese food places in Singapore, but one of my favourites that I go to when I crave for a bit of 卤肉饭 is 黑轮食堂 at Queensway Shopping Centre.

Simple store with lots of flavour!

Queensway Shopping Centre is known for sports apparels that are available for reasonable prices. Still, surprisingly they do have some of the best eateries, serving delicious, mouthwatering meals and snacks that you would not think possible.

And 黑轮食堂 is one of those eateries. Situated behind this famous tutu kueh place, they specialised in Taiwanese bento boxes. I chanced upon them quite some time ago, and I have been going back there whenever I crave for some delicious 卤肉饭.

Just a tiny little kitchen serving up a power pack meal!

Their bentos are served in a tin box, much like how it was done in the 1960s and 70s in Taiwan. I always like to order their Signature Mixed Bento. It comes completely packed with a delicious combination of ingredients that will satiate even the hungriest of people! You have in there, rice, minced braised pork, sliced braised pork belly, braised chicken, fried chicken, salted vegetables, mushroom, boiled cabbage, and half a boiled egg! How’s that for a full hearty meal!

Mix and scoop a mouthful of savoury delight!

The braised meats are so saturated with flavours, you can taste the effort put into making sure it’s done right! I always like to mix everything, rice, meat, and vegetables, all together. Then scoop them up as much as a spoon can possibly hold before I devour it like someone who’s been on a week-long diet!

That tasty mouthful of Taiwanese excellence always brings back recollections of those challenging, but memorable days! I perpetually end the meals I have there absolutely full, and satisfied.

Go give them a shot, and let me know what you think, or reach out to me if you have others to recommend! I’m always on a lookout for a savoury, delightful, good bowl of Taiwanese 卤肉饭!
