Weekend yum cha at one of the traditional dim sum restaurant in town – The Red Star Restaurant

It was a Saturday morning, we thought of starting the weekend early by visiting a traditional dim sum restaurant that we keep hearing about — The Red Star Restaurant.

Great for family gatherings.

Stepping into the Red Star Restaurant felt like being transported back in time. You see signs of modernisation, but time seemed to have stood still for most of what is in there, the whole environment, decor, how they operate, almost everything.

Friendly, experienced auntie serving our porridge in a jiffy.

As you enter, you’re greeted by a flurry of activities.

Service staff are going about their business hurriedly. Pushcarts are being wheeled about expertly, and effortlessly. Customers are either waving to catch the attention of the service staff, calling out their orders, eating or busy chatting with fellow diners around their table. Overall, a dynamic environment full of energy!

The food is delicious!

A healthy selection of dim sum dishes is always being carted around the whole restaurant waiting for you to order. Most of the food items are readied in the kitchen and placed in the pushcarts. Some of the food items will even be prepared fresh by your table, a delightful process to experience.

A must order!

What is dim sum without siew mai?

Char siew bao.

One of the dishes that we really like was the vinegar pig trotters, it is a must-try! They recommended it to us, and we were pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was!

One of the best vinegar pig trotters we’ve had!

To place your order, simply catch the attention of the service staff in charge of the cart of what you want.

You do so by waving to them or just wait patiently, they’ll just come by your table eventually to ask if you would like a serving of whatever they’re wheeling around. And if you don’t see what you want, just catch the attention of any service staff and ask for it. If it’s available, it’ll be on your table in no time.

Interestingly, we noticed that the service team members are mostly made up of the elderly. Some are very friendly and would crack a joke or two with you. Some are very serious and very focused on the job. But overall, the service is excellent. You also get a sense that the whole staff cohort is a very experienced group of people, and knows precisely how to go about running things smoothly.

Delicious!

Another interesting thing we noticed is the yellow coloured, old school order chit or card. Once your orders are delivered, the quantity will be indicated in the order chit. At the end of your meal, you bring it to the cashier, and the total cost will be calculated for payment.

A taste of the nostalgic ordering system.

We took our time, and spent a couple of hours, slowly enjoying the food, environment, and company. I must say that it felt perfect to be able to have a nice meal without being hurried.

Classic dim sum.

Overall, an excellent nostalgic dining experience for a fantastic start to a weekend!
