Types of Rice Dumpling Around The World

Before we share the different types of rice dumpling around the world, we would like to share with you the story of Dragon Boat Festival.

During the end of spring or early of autumn, there is a well-known festival for commemorating the death of the minister of Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was the minister of the ancient Chinese state of Chu during the warring period of the Zhou dynasty. He was renowned as a poet and was distinguished by his patriotism. Despite this, his talent was not appreciated by the king, and was even accused of crimes and banished. Later, the capital of Chu was invaded by the Qin army. Qu Yuan was in great despair upon seeing the capital being invaded. During this time, he wrote a poetic masterpiece called “Hua Sha” on the 5th of May. He thereafter committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River.

The local people admired Qu Yuan’s patriotism so much. They made glutinous rice balls and wrapped it within bamboo leaves. They then threw these into the river. They believed that the fish within the river will eat the glutinous rice balls instead of devouring the body of Qu Yuan. Thereafter, every 5th of May in the lunar calendar, eating Zongzi (a rice dumplings) has become the norm to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, and this became known as the Dragon Boat Festival.

Nowadays, the traditional style of rice dumplings has still been retained. However, the specific types of rice dumpling has been diversified and varies between country to country, with each having their own unique flavour.

For example, the Vietnamese rice dumplings is squarish and is eaten salted. It incorporates shrimp, lean meat, duck egg yolk and red bean filing. The flavour resembles the versions available in Fujian and Guangdong.

Burmese like to eat rice dumplings but is not for Dragon Boat Festival celebration. Their rice dumplings are made using the glutinous rice as its main ingredient and stuffed with ripe banana and coconuts.

Philippine rice dumplings are prepared in long strips and has also become a popular food during Christmas.

Finally, in Singapore, rice dumplings are prepared in the most common style – a triangular shape; but some variations of it can be found having a long and squarish shape. The variety of flavours has also evolved based on the multicultural background of Singapore. For example, there are Pork and Salted Egg Rice Dumplings, Sweet Dumplings, Nyonya Chang, Guangdong Zong, Mala Rice Dumplings, Rice Dumplings with XO, Mixed Rice Dumplings etc.
