Fu Lin Tofu Garden – Not Just Another Yong Tau Foo
Whenever people mention “Yong Tau Foo“, one would think of a healthy, delicious, soupy bowl of ingredients, often mixed with noodles, bee hoon, or kway teow like the ones at Bai Nian Yong Tau Foo.
Well, the ones in Fu Lin are very different.
Their version of Yong Tau Foo is savoury by nature, and you could maybe say that it’s the opposite of healthy? When someone saw our article on Yong Tau Foo, they recommended that we check this place out.
So, on a Sunday, I decided to drop by for a late lunch.

Skip the crowd.
You get to choose!
Arriving at the Siglap branch, I quickly found a table for one and went ahead to their ordering counter to place my order. From my previous visits to other Yong Tau Foo stalls, I was so used to not having the choice of ingredients. So much so that I just stood there like an idiot, telling the staff that I would like to order for one person.
It felt awkward when it was pointed out to me that I should pick the items I wanted from the display shelves by the side.

You get to choose!
I chuckled at my stupidity and then went over sheepishly to choose the ingredients I wanted, made the payment, and went back to my seat.
Not your usual Yong Tau Foo.
My order soon arrived, and it looked very different from the other Yong Tau Foo I’ve had before. The ingredients are laid out on a big plate and covered with a generous slather of thick, starchy, dark sauce that has an equally plentiful serving of minced meat in it.

Saucy, savoury, delicious version of Yong Tau Foo
I also ordered a bowl of bee hoon as part of the meal. It looks like they are using the thick version of the bee hoon, also covered almost to the top of the bowl with the same delicious looking, meaty sauce.

Delicious thick bee hoon.
The sauce works!
I started with a taste of the thick sauce. It’s got this almost gravy-like consistency; rich, creamy, and very flavourful. Aside from contributing to the rich flavours, the minced meat in the sauce gives it a lovely texture that goes really well with the ingredients and bee hoon.

You can taste the freshness.
I found myself coating everything on the plate with the sauce before eating it. Same goes for the bee hoon, I took my time to give the bowl of bee hoon a sound mix before I ate.
As I tucked into my meal, I realised that what made the whole meal work so well, aside from the fresh ingredients used, which are already delicious on their own, is the gravy-like sauce.

Bee hoon covered with the same savoury goodness!
Everything tasted more luscious, and the texture felt more refined with the sauce coated on everything. I found myself cleaning the sauce off the plate with my spoon after my meal, I just couldn’t help it.
Given the nature of the saucy meal, I kind of expected myself to feel really bloated after the meal. Instead, I just sat back, looked up at the simple, quiet scene outside of the shop, and sighed a breath of satisfaction.
I took a bit of time to quietly sit there for a while, lost in my own thoughts before leaving the establishment, feeling content with the lovely lunch I just had.
