Delicious Fresh Oyster Mee Sua – 羹面线 – Little Hawker Gem

Sometimes when you take a bit of time to wander around, you might just run into something unexpected. Today was one of those days. I was looking to have a light lunch at the Marine Parade Food Centre when I chance upon this inconspicuous stall. What caught my attention was what they were selling, Orh Ah Mee Sua (蚵仔面线), also known as Taiwanese Oyster Vermicelli.

Orh ah mee sua (蚵仔面线)

This dish is popular in the night markets in Taiwan, and while I was in Taiwan, I love having a bowl of it whenever I visit the night market, which is quite often.

When I saw this dish in a hawker centre, I was a little surprised as this food is more often sold in Taiwanese themed cafes or restaurants in Singapore. I decided to order a bowl of it to see how it matched up to the ones I had in Taiwan.

Friendly and welcoming!

As I waited for the order to be prepared, I noticed from the menu that they have different forms of mee sua, including ones with chicken, prawns etc. After I got my order, I added a generous portion of vinegar, garlic, and coriander. I quickly found a table to have a go at the delicious-looking bowl of orh ah mee sua.

I started by giving the bowl a good stir to expose the generous servings of fresh oysters and to let the ingredients and sauces mix. Then, at one go, I slurped down a spoonful of the mee sua with an oyster in there, and boy was it good!

Fresh oysters!

The mee sua is swimming comfortably in the goopy, starchy soup base. It’s so soft that it’s almost like “drinking” mee sua. The vinegar complements the taste of the dish wonderfully, and the soft, slippery lumps of oysters are so perfect with this dish! You can savour the freshness of the oysters almost like they were just harvested this morning. Any fresher and you would think they had direct access to the ocean somewhere in the stall. The black fungus and the mushroom gives a bit of the crunch that goes well with the smooth starchy sensation of the dish.

Overall, there are some differences between the ones you get in Taiwan but still, an excellent bowl of 蚵仔面线!

Go have a bowl and let me know what you think of it. And if you come across any other stalls like that in your neighbourhood, do drop us a note. We’ll be happy to go explore them!
