Anson Town: The Authentic Ipoh-Style Chee Cheong Fun & Cuisines in Singapore

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The Authentic Teluk Intan Chee Cheong Fun

12 years ago, while working in KL, I had the opportunity to visit my friends in Ipoh. The place was ringed by caves, cave temples and beautiful viewpoints. For those who are into grand monuments, there is even a castle to visit, remnants of the British colonial times.

And then there’s the food.

There is a host of delicious food in Ipoh, but their chee cheong fun was something that stood out amongst them.

The chee cheong fun, also known as the rice noodle roll or steamed rice roll, is a Cantonese dish from the Guangdong Province in southern China. The base is a mix of rice flour, tapioca or glutinous rice flour with water. Steamed into sheets that are served plain with sauces or with ingredients rolled into them. Some are served dry, filled with preserved vegetables, turnip and dried shrimps. I personally love having them plain with the red coloured, sweet and sour sauce topped with condiments over it.

Malaysian Food in Singapore - Anson Town

When I first tasted the ones served by Singapore Anson Town, the taste was the closest to what I had in Ipoh. It brought out the good old memories I had of my yesteryears.

The Owner of Singapore Anson Town

The previous owner of Singapore Anson Town is from Teluk Intan. She married and moved to Singapore over 20 years ago and later decided to bring this favourite Malaysian food of her hometown as a family business into Singapore. Fact:

Michelle, the current owner of Singapore Anson Town, is a 3rd generation native of Anson Town. She is also from Ipoh and took over the business a couple of years back from the previous owner who had since retired.

Michelle had never been in the F&B business before, so she spent quite some time contemplating the various factors before making the decision to take over the place. She then spent many hours and put in a lot of effort to reproduce the authentic taste of the various Ipoh styled cuisines (Malaysian food) into Singapore. During that time, she also had to learn about how to run an F&B business successfully.

Chee Cheong Fun

The dish that many flocked to Anson Town for is their chee cheong fun. It comes in a variety of combinations, but any first-time visitor should go for their “Anson Special”.

These steamed rolls are silky smooth and are infused with generous stuffings of turnips and dried shrimps as part of the creation process. To give the chee cheong fun an even richer flavour, they are left to cool down before being served to the customers. This process allows the rice rolls to breath and saturates themselves with the rich flavours of the stuffing.

Pair them with the pickled green chillies, and you have yourself a must-try for many foodies and a beautiful journey down memory lane for many homesick Malaysians.

Curry Noodle

The curry noodles are also one of the favourites among customers. Cooked differently from the usual curry we have in Singapore, the light and yet flavourful curry noodle pack a spicy punch. Once you have it, you’ll find yourself wanting more of that fiery kick.

Assam Laksa

Their Assam Laksa is another golden favourite. The recipe they are using now was used by a famous Assam Laksa store owner back in Ipoh. The owner had passed away, and the store assistant wanted to make sure the recipe was passed on and made available for generations to come.

Michelle and her team had the opportunity to learn from the store assistant, and they spent countless hours working tirelessly to perfect the taste. The result is this beautiful combination of sweet, sour and spicy elements that wakes you up to a series of mind-blowing flavours of wonders!

Preserve the Taste & Pass Down to Next Generation (Malaysian Food in Singapore)

Since taking over the business, Michelle spent a lot of time and effort, introducing more Malaysian favourites into the menu that we see now.

“We want to preserve the taste of these dishes and pass it down to the next generation So that more people get to enjoy all the food from Malaysia” – Michelle

Michelle shared that due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions, many Malaysians can’t travel back to Malaysia and are homesick. They shared that coming to Anson Town to have that taste of home have helped them deal with that homesickness, even if it’s just a temporary relief.

It’s heartwarming to see how something as simple as food can do to help in situations like this.

We hope that Michelle and her team in Anson Town will continue doing what they are doing. And to bring in even more authentic Malaysian food recipes into Singapore and share even more joys of the tastes with everyone.
